The most expensive house sold in England and Wales last year changed hands for a staggering £72.3 million according to the latest data from the Land Registry. Unsurprisingly, that property right here in the capital.

The newly built 42 Old Church Street in Kensington and Chelsea was sold for £73.2 million in March last year. That’s 209 times the England and Wales average home of £350,396.

The property is in one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in the capital and was part of the luxury Glebe development. Despite the big price tag, from the outside, it doesn’t look as glorious as the inside with it being a big grey block, reminiscent of a prison.

Radlett House in Camden was the next most expensive home sold in 2023. The mansion cost its new owners £42.9 million according to the Land Registry data.

To Mayfair next for the country’s most expensive flat sold last year which was Apartment 802 in 1 Ashburton Place, sold for £38.6 million in June.

That’s followed by 38 Clarendon Road in Kensington and Chelsea, which was sold for £35.0 million with an apartment on Grosvenor Square the next most expensive home in the capital at £33.9 million.

That’s followed by a semi-detached property on Tregunter Road in Kensington and Chelsea at £32.5 million, a detached £31.3 million house on Holland Villas Road (also in Kensington and Chelsea), and a £30.0 million home on Clarendon Road (again in Kensington and Chelsea).

There were a total of 15,689 houses sold for £1.0 million or more in England and Wales in 2023. That’s down from 29,737 such homes in 2022. Half of those sold this year were in Greater London.

Surrey, meanwhile, was home to another 9% of them, Hertfordshire 4% of them, Hampshire 3%, and Buckinghamshire another 3%.

A total of 137 homes were sold for over £1.0 million in Greater Manchester, which is the most of any county outside of the South.

The most expensive house in the United Kingdom is a 45-bedroom mansion known as “Updown Court.” Located in Windlesham, Surrey, it was built in the 1920s and has been owned by several prominent individuals, including the Qatari royal family. The mansion boasts luxurious amenities such as a cinema, bowling alley, tennis court, and swimming pool. It also features extensive gardens and grounds, covering an area of over 58 acres.

In 2021, Updown Court was listed for sale at a staggering price of £150 million (approximately $200 million). This made it the most expensive residential property on the market in the United Kingdom. However, it remains unsold as of my last knowledge update in September 2021.

The high price tag of Updown Court is attributed to its unique features, spaciousness, and historical significance. It is considered a symbol of wealth and luxury, attracting the attention of potential buyers from around the world.
